The hand and forearm expose the real physical limits of miniature motor winding, high-ratio planetary gearing, and thermal dissipation inside a 25mm joint envelope. Volume manufacturing only works when those electromechanical modules survive millions of continuous cycles without manual shimming.

Sam Altman is saying that OpenAI plans to build a humanoid robot, along with other designs because the world around us was built for humans (Save this). Doors, stairs, computers, tools, kitchens, vehicles, and factory equipment are all designed around the human body, a robot with a similar shape could therefore perform useful tasks without requiring people to redesign the entire world. His bigger vision is that one day, everyone could have a personal robot that handles the jobs they do not want to do like cleaning, carrying things, operating equipment, helping elderly people, or completing…

A TAM revised 5x without a shipping product means the assumptions moved, not the market — and every dollar in that curve sits past 2030, which is beyond the horizon of any semi order book being written today. The near-term BOM story for humanoids is actuators and reducers, not silicon.

The hardest problem in physical AI may be the magnet, not the model

Skip to content AI Learning and Artificial Intelligence Credit: Canva Actuators account for 40% to 60% of a humanoid robot’s bill of materials and China refines roughly 90% of the rare earth magnets inside them, which makes the components rather than the models the limit on scale. Europe has a 2030 cap on single country supply under the Critical Raw Materials Act, and one company, Schaeffler, building the actuators at volume. The hardest problem in physical AI is not the AI. Actuators are in short supply from a small pool of qualified manufacturers, and new capacity takes years, not quarters,…

Robotics deep dive: HUMANOID CHOKEPOINTS Almost every supply-chain post about humanoids has one country in it. Trace five critical inputs one at a time and they land in four different places. Magnets first, because that is where the argument usually stops. Every high-torque joint runs on sintered NdFeB, and on the IEA's 2024 figures China holds 91% of refined output and 94% of sintered permanent magnets, against 60% of the mining. Mining is the distributed part, and the chokepoint is the chemistry. The precision reducer is the node almost nobody names. Nabtesco states on its own site that it…

Top 20 Components to Watch | New suppliers from Mexico, Taiwan, Japan, Korean | The VC and Entrepreneurs Angle Two weeks apart, two separate US policy actions closed off the low-cost path into American drone and robotics hardware. July 28, the FCC added foreign-made "advanced robotic devices" — humanoids, quadrupeds — to its Covered List, blocking new authorizations. Scaling production is the correct framing. But the binding constraint is not the assembly line. It is the actuator supply chain. Each humanoid needs 20 to 30 precision reducers. Nabtesco and Harmonic Drive control 75% of that market globally. At 100,000 units per year you are competing with every industrial robot OEM on Earth for the same components. Production speed is gated by procurement, not engineering.

@BarrettYouTube The component supply chain half is the part that actually compounds. Whole robots are copyable in a year; harmonic reducer and roller screw capacity is not - that is machine tools and years of tolerance grinding. Did anyone quote lead times on precision reducers?

8:58 PM ETHDHarmonic Drive
@smsehy on X

The supply chain concentration in precision reducers is the part most people underestimate. Harmonic Drive and Nabtesco built their positions over decades of iteration on gear tooth profiles, lubrication, and thermal management at the micron level. Scaling humanoid production to millions of units per year requires scaling reducer production by orders of magnitude. That is not a capital problem. It is a precision manufacturing knowledge problem.

8:43 PM ETNVIDIA

The picks and shovels framing is right but most people name the wrong shovels. NVIDIA gets the attention. Harmonic Drive and Nabtesco in Japan control roughly 75% of global precision reducers. Every humanoid joint, every collaborative robot wrist, runs through the same two factories. Fund ten humanoid companies. If they all need the same reducers, the production ceiling is set by component throughput in Tsu and Hotaka, not by venture capital.
