The hand and forearm expose the real physical limits of miniature motor winding, high-ratio planetary gearing, and thermal dissipation inside a 25mm joint envelope. Volume manufacturing only works when those electromechanical modules survive millions of continuous cycles without manual shimming.

Digital models scale exponentially by distributing weights across networks, but physical AI scaling remains gated by physical component manufacturing lead times. Sourcing specialized precision cycloidal gearboxes and high-voltage motor drives requires physical plant capital that cannot be accelerated by compute alone.

Actuators can potentially represent ~40–60% of a humanoid's BOM. And inside the actuator? Gearbox Motor Driver Bearings Sensors Go one level deeper. The gearbox itself can represent roughly 30–50% of actuator cost. So the investment trail starts looking like: Robot → Actuator → Gearbox Follow the value.
